Oxides

Oxides are binary compounds, which means that they contain two different elements. More specifically, an oxide is a radical with oxygen. These constituents are Alcohols, Terpenes or Ketones that have been “oxidized.” They can be identified by the name of the molecule from which they are derived, which is followed by the word “Oxide.” Their proper names also typically end with the suffixes “-oxide” or “-ole.” Oxides that are commonly found in essential oils include Rose Oxide, Linalool Oxide, Pinene Oxide, and Eucalyptol, which is also known as 1, 8-cineole. Eucalyptol is the most prevalent essential oil oxide and has the strongest scent of all molecule classes. Even in small amounts, oxides provide essential oils with their distinctive fragrances.
